My name is Femke Neunzig and I’m 27 years old.
I originally come from a city called Heerenveen in The Netherlands.
Teaching is something I’ve always wanted to do, ever since I was very young. I’m currently teaching Dutch as a foreign language on the high schools ‘MPC and Sundial’ on Sint Maarten in the Caribbean. I am also involved with NIPA on Sint Maarten.
I write my own Soca, Dancehall, Reggae and Pop songs in Dutch to make learning Dutch fun and enjoyable.
My hobbies are making music, write music, working out, cooking and working with kids.
I am part of the ‘SXM Young Embassadors’ foundation with Angelique Romou.
We are having the ‘Kids place’ at the SOS radio 95.9 on Saturdays.
I am also the representative for Sint Maarten in a platform called ‘NVT netwerk’. This is a group consisting of people in education from different Dutch Caribbean islands.
The goal of this platform is to improve the ‘Dutch language’ on all islands.
Working with children and being in front of a class is my passion. Combining teaching and my passion for music and with challenges abroad, learning about new cultures and further improving myself makes me a happy person.
My dream has always been to teach abroad, take on challenges and learn about foreign cultures. After completion of my studies and receiving a bachelor’s degree in education I’ve worked as a substitute for a full school year. During this time I learned a lot from and about colleagues, different teaching methods, working with children from different cultural backgrounds and how to deal with parents in a proper way.
The second year as a teacher I was asked by a school director to teach a grade 6 class which consisted of 32 students. During this year I learned how to perfect my way of teaching and how to involve parents. The responsibility of having my own class and improving their grades and stimulating their development has been extremely valuable to me.
Before living on Sint Maarten I was teaching on Saba for three years. Saba is a small beautiful island next to Sint Maarten.
On Saba I was also the Dutch coordinator which made me responsible for the quality of Dutch education on the primary school. After school, in the late afternoon, I started a children’s choir. In the evenings I led a Dutch course for adults from different countries on different levels and I taught MBO for the comprehensive school on Saba. I also develop new Dutch lessons for a Dutch institute called ‘Taalunie’.
